Mildred Irene Murphy, 90, of rural Lyle, Minn., died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in Austin, Minn.
She was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Austin, Minn., the daughter of Ole and Sadie (Naversath) Helgeson. She attended school in Lyle and graduated from Lyle High School in 1940. On Oct. 4, 1941, she married Richard Gregg Murphy in Lyle, Minn. The couple lived on the Murphy family farm where they raised 3 children. That farm has been in the Murphy family for 152 years. Mildred and Richard moved into Austin in 1989 and she entered St. Mark’s Lutheran Home in March of 2013. Mildred was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and WELCA in Lyle, Minn. She enjoyed shopping, driving fast, cookies and especially Hershey bars. Mildred also had a great love for animals and brought home many stray animals during her time on the farm. She loved being with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her children Larry (Sandra) Murphy of Lyle, Ric (Tanya) Murphy of Leroy, Marsha (Roger) Evenson of Delafield, Wis.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard Murphy on March 28, 2013.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Lyle with Rev. Barbara Finley-Shea officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona, Iowa. The family prefers that memorials be directed to Alzheimer’s Research. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.worlein.com.
