BLOOMING PRAIRIE —The Blooming Prairie girls basketball team couldn’t have been on a much better roll headed into Tuesday’s showdown with Goodhue. The Awesome Blossoms were ranked No. 3 in Class A, they had won 12 straight games and they had plenty of motivation to beat a Wildcats team that ended their season last year.

But the Awesome Blossoms didn’t have quite enough to finish off Goodhue as they lost 40-38 in a game that will likely have an impact on subsection seedings.

Madison Worke hit a 3-pointer to pull the Blossoms within 40-38 with 25 seconds left in the game and BP forced a Goodhue turnover with 15 seconds left, but BP’s Taylor Hagen missed a buzzer beating 3-pointer as time expired.

“This one stings. It really does,” said Madison, who had nine points, six steals and three assists. “You’ve got to take a step back and look at the big picture. We go back to the drawing board. We knew we had to play well. It was a big subsection game. We have to play better. I think nerves kind of played a part in it, but we’ve got to get over it.”

The Blossoms (14-2 overall) forced Goodhue (12-4 overall) to turn the ball over 22 times and BP had just 11 turnovers. However, BP shot just 29 percent from the field and it went 1-for-7 on 3-pointers as Goodhue went 5-for-11 on 3-pointers.

“Wherever it was, we had good looks all night long and they just weren’t going in,” BP head coach John Worke said. “It’s going to be challenging for some of the kids with their confidence now being a little tainted because they didn’t shoot so well. We’ve got to come back and try again.”

Both teams struggled to score throughout the night as neither team led by more than five points at any time. BP took a 31-28 lead when Kaci Gwilt hit two free throws with 8:30 left in the game, but the Wildcats scored the next six points to take the lead for good.

Goodhue was led by Shelby Hinsch, who had 18 points and seven rebounds and Hagen had 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and six blocks for BP.

While it was tough to have their winning streak end, the Blossoms are hoping that Tuesday’s game will help them when they have close battles down the stretch.

“In the tournament we’ll be doing the same thing. We’ve got to step up,” John said. “There’s always four good teams in our subsection and you’re not going to have an easy game in the semifinals. It’s going to be a fight then and beyond.”
