ST. PAUL — The Como Park Zoo and Conservatory’s newborn baby orangutan still doesn’t have a name, but she made her public debut on Thursday.

Markisa, a 28-year-old Sumatran orangutan, gave birth via Caesarean section to her yet-to-be-named daughter on Jan. 7 at the University Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center.

The 29-day-old baby was to set to be viewable in the zoo’s Primate Building from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday.

A naming contest runs through Feb. 16, with voting conducted at the zoo or online at givemn.org/organization/Como-Friends. In exchange for a donation, the public can vote to name her Aanjay, Cinta or Kemala.

The winning name will be revealed at 2 p.m. Feb. 16.

The zoo will host a baby shower-themed celebration Feb. 14-16, over the President’s Day weekend, also featuring baby zebras Melee and Ruckus, as well as Skye, the baby giraffe.
