Best Bets: Shows, fishing and smashing cars

Get ready to have fun this weekend as a princess is transformed into a dragon, a masked ball takes place and cars smash each other for cancer. This weekend is sure to have something for everyone as the town continues to fight cancer in various ways.

1. Matchbox presents: The Pale Pink Dragon

7 to 8 p.m., Friday, 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the Historic Paramount Theatre

The search is on for the missing Princess Pinkie. Get ready for magic, colorful characters and good versus evil as Matchbox Children’s Theatre performs Phyllis McCallum’s “The Pale Pink Dragon,” a play the company first performed in 1980. After her disappearance, a dragon lurks in the forest, and it is presumed that it has devoured her. Gallant Prince Hal, his bumbling squire, the king, Chamberlain and Pinkie’s white cat are on a quest to destroy the dragon. However, when Prince Hal cannot bring himself to slay the lovely, pale, pink dragon the evil spell is broken and all ends happily ever after. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under.

2. Winter Masquerade Ball

6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Hormel Historic Home

The YMCA of Austin’s Winter Masquerade Ball is back and open to the public. The event will include masks, a craft table, a photo booth with props, dance instruction and a disc jockey. The event will have a new menu this year and a chocolate fountain dessert. Parents, grandparents, sons/daughters are all welcome and are encouraged to wear their fanciest dresses and suits. The price is $30 per couple for members and $50 for non-members.

3. Brother Music, Sister Rhythm

7 to 8 p.m., Friday, Village Coop of Austin

Al Brentner and Anne Koschmeder perform as a little hillbilly band with a country western style.

4. Fishing for a Cure

12 to 2 p.m., Saturday, East Side Lake

The 2015 Fishing for a Cure will continue the fight against cancer. Entry fee is a $10, which includes drilled holes, bait, food and entry into door prize drawings. After the ice fishing contest, there will also be food and drawings at the Minnesota National Guard Armory in Austin. For questions, call Jim at 507-990-4359. First place will win $300, second place $200, and third place $100.

5. Valentines Bingo

5 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Brownsdale Fire Station

The Brownsdale Fire Department is raising money to buy a new Jaws of Life. Costs is $1 per sheet, with three games per sheet, and there is a cash payout. The event is designed to be fun for all ages, and there will be door prizes every hour.

6. Open Kid Studio Painting

1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Austin ArtWorks Center

Bring the kids and have fun painting, using clay and more. The cost is $15 per child for AACA member, and $20 per child for non-members. For more information, call 507-434-0934.

7. Silk Scarf Dyeing with Mary Nordeng

2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Austin ArtWorks Center

Join award-winning fiber artist Mary Nordeng to learn the process of silk dyeing. Create beautiful silk scarves without the huge investment in dyes and materials. Each student will leave class with two hand-dyed silk scarves they created. No previous experience is necessary. Participants are recommend to wear old clothes. Cost for AACA members is $25 for entry and $25 for supplies. Cost for non-members is $30 for entry and $25 supplies. For more information, call 507-434-0934.

8. Second Annual Smashing Cancer Demo Derby

2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Mower County Fairgrounds

9. “The Phantom of the Opera” silent film and organist

4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church

Organist Andrew Galuska will accompany the 1925 silent film “The Phantom of the Opera” as part of a program sponsored by Our Savior’s Concert Series and the Southeast Minnesota American Guild of Organists. A free will offering will be accepted. For more information, call 507-437-4516.
