MINNEAPOLIS — The Packers put together one of their best meets in the last 30 years when they broke a total of six AHS school records and placed swimmers on the podium in five events in the Class A state swimming and diving meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center Saturday.

Austin junior Craig Heimark won the Packers’ first state title since 2003 when he took first in the 100-yard freestyle and finished third in the 50-yard freestyle. Heimark re-set his school record in both events on Saturday and Austin junior Ben Walker finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly as he re-set his school record in that event.

“When I first looked up at the record boards when I was younger starting to swim fly, those times didn’t even seem human,” Walker said.

Austin’s 200-yard freestyle relay team took fourth and it broke a school record and the Packer 400-yard freestyle relay team broke a school record and took third.

“It was among the best meets that I’ve ever had at Austin,” said Austin head coach Lynn Gulbrandson, who started coaching the team in 1985. “We just got faster as the meet went on and we broke six school records. We didn’t just break them, we cut seconds off them.”

Austin senior Sawyer Myers swam a total of 1,750 yards over the two days and he also set a new AHS record in the 500-yard freestyle.

“I remember when I was little looking at those times thinking I’d never beat them. We just crushed that time [in the 400-free relay],” Myers said. “I’m ready for a nap. For the last 25 of that 100 I was dying a little bit, but I gave it all.”

Gulbrandson said that Myers has had a big impact on the team over the past few years. Not only is Myers a solid swimmer, he’s a strong leader as well.

“He takes on the toughest events we’ve got,” Gulbrandson said of Myers. “Yesterday he had to swim the 500 and went into the relay with no rest.”

Myers said that watching Heimark win the 100-free state title got him pumped up for the rest of the meet. He’ll relish the performance that he and the Packers had on Saturday.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” Myers said. “It means a lot and it shows how much work we’ve put in over the last five months. We did great.”
