The Austin baseball team couldn’t avoid the big inning against Albert Lea as it lost 8-3 in Dick Seltz Field Wednesday.

The Tigers (2-5 overall, 2-4 Big Nine) loaded the bases with three bunt singles in the fifth and they were able to put in five runs in the frame to take a 7-2 lead.

“Our focus this year is to play a complete seven and avoid that one inning,” Austin head coach Chris Gogolewski said. “Albert Lea does a great job bunting and we’ve got to make those plays. When we’ve got the infield drawn in, we’ve got to make that decision on whether we’re going home or to first to get the out.”

The Packers (1-5 overall, 1-5 Big Nine) left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings and they scored just one run combined in those two frames. They also left runners on second and third in the bottom of the first inning after Jason Stoulil had singled in a run to make it 1-1.

Austin was able to get a few new players in the lineup in Wednesday’s game as Mitch Truax, Brady McDermott and Riley Wagner all got starts.

“It’s good to see that for them so they can experience a full game. It’s good for me to see what they can do and it’s nice to know I can depend on my lineup,” Gogolewski said.
