The crash occurred at about 3:43 on Highway 218 at the intersection with 28th Street SE. The crash involved two vehicles, a Subaru and a Volkswagen. The Volkswagen sustained heavy front-end damage and came to rest in the ditch between the highway and the railroad tracks to the east, while the Subaru appeared to have struck with the front passenger side and landed on its side in the northbound lane of the highway.

State patrol records show the two drivers were Daryl Windschitl, 43, of Austin and Julie Peters, 40, of Owatonna.

Windschitl, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was driving the Subaru, and Peters was driving the Volkswagon, according to the state patrol.

Both were taken on stretchers to waiting ambulances, which transported them to Owatonna Hospital. The state patrol reports both sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

At least one victim had to be extracted by emergency workers who opened the roof of a vehicle to extract them.

In addition to the state patrol, Gold Cross Ambulance, Owatonna Fire Department and Steele County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
