After a 5-0 loss to Mankato West Thursday, the Austin girls soccer team had to take a look in the mirror.

The team practiced at 6:30 a.m. Friday morning to instill an attitude adjustment and it paid dividends as the Packers came out and beat Worthington (0-5 overall) 8-0 in Art Hass Stadium Saturday. The eight goals scored by the Packers are the most the team has scored in a game in at least a decade.

“We had to fix the attitude [Thursday],” Austin head coach Enrique Camarena-Corzo said. “Today I was really happy with the girls. The girls never stopped running, there was good passing and we had a lot of shots on goal. It’s the first time we had everything going. We didn’t worry about the referees or the heat and we just came here to play.”

Austin senior Steph Chandler got the Packers (2-2 overall) started as she scored three of Austin’s first four goals of the game. Chandler added a fourth goal when she twice rebounded her own miss and finally put the ball through the net.

“Having great fans and a great team to motivate us even though it’s pretty hot out helped us,” Chandler said. “I had to drive and push through the heat. [The last goal] felt pretty great.”

Camerena-Corzo said that Chandler showed the type of senior leadership his team needs in the win.

“When you see a good leader like that it becomes contagious. We need her to take a little pressure off the goal keeper,” he said.

Isabell Leuer, Chloe Summerfield, Maya Wuertz and Christina Hernandez all scored goal in the win for the Packers, who had 30 shots on goal. Worthington had just two shots on goal.

With two wins on the season, Austin has already surpassed last season’s total of one win.
