The Austin girls swimming and diving team made some strides this year, but it wasn’t able to qualify any athletes for the state meet at the Section 1A finals in Bud Higgins Pool Friday.

Austin junior diver Maddie Mullenbach finished fifth place and was just one spot from making the state meet in her first year as a diver.

“She had a phenomenal run. She had kind of a rocky start on Wednesday and she finished very strong,” Austin head coach Alexa Dolan Peterson said. “I hope it helps her come back that much stronger next year. Ten points away from making it to state in your first year is something to be proud of.”

The Austin 400-yard freestyle relay team of Shannan Kelly, Katelyn Hillson, Kristina Thorson and Abby Gogolewski took sixth place with a time of 3:56.98.

“Overall, I can’t complain,” Dolan Peterson said. “Almost all of these swimmers have finished this season faster than how they finished last season. That’s a successful season. We don’t just measure it by a trip to state.”
