Best Bets: A weekend of food and tunes

Get ready for some great food and great music this weekend. The community is set to celebrate autumn and the upcoming holidays with meals featuring ham, turkey, baked goods and more. The weekend continues with a Mayo Clinic Health Systems wellness event, lessons about about cultures, and a concert featuring Har Mar Superstar, Reina Del and The Peter Jacobs Trio.

1. Laatikko/Box

7-9 p.m., Friday, Austin ArtWorks Center

This program explores the emotional terrain people encounter when they step into unknown worlds. With a combination of the reading of Finnish-American archival material, recorded audio interviews with recent immigrants, live violin, voice, and electronics, there will be a poignant sound experience. Laatikko/Box is a search for commonalities: between distant immigrant stories, and between the immigrant journey and our own journeys of change. The program is free will donations.

2. Sons of Norway Bake Sale

8 a.m.-12 p.m., Friday, Mower County Senior Center

3. Senior Center Traditional Thanksgiving Meal

12-1:30 p.m., Friday, Mower County Senior Center

This year’s traditional Thanksgiving meal will feature turkey and all the fixings, including dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, cranberries and more. Cost for members is $8.50 and for non-members is $9.50. Sign up by stopping by the senior center front desk or by calling 507-433-2370.

4. Know Your Numbers

9-11:30 a.m., Saturday, Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin

This program features free wellness screening, including blood pressure, BMI, glucose, cholesterol and more. Learn about community wellness resources, enjoy free chair massages, browse gifts to equip healthy living, and use this opportunity to sign up for the Mayo Clinic Patient Portal. The program is free and open to the public and located in the Rehab Lobby area, lower level. For more information, call 507-377-6389.

5. Good Samaritan Society Comforcare Fall Festival

12-4 p.m., Saturday, Comforcare Senior Services

6. Ham Supper

4:30-7 p.m., Saturday, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brownsdale

This dinner is a free will donation, and the funds will be used for 2016 Camp Omega Vacation Bible School.

7. 13th Annual Thanksgiving Feast

5-10:30 p.m., Saturday, Holiday Inn Austin Conference Center

This annual feast and fundraiser for the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center includes a social hour, silent and live auctions, raffles, live music, and a Hormel pork loin dinner. Tickets are $35 per person for Friends of the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center; $40 for non-members. 8. Czech It Out Czech Dinner

5-7:30 p.m., Saturday, Austin VFW Post 1216

Get ready for the annual fundraiser to support Austin’s VFW and Disabled American Veterans organizations, as well as the Austin Noon Kiwanis this year. The menu includes roast pork, potato dumplings, gravy, sauerkraut, corn, kolaches, and chocolate cake. There are also door prizes and a silent auction, and a grand prize drawing. 9. Caravan du Nord

7:30-11 p.m., Saturday, Historic Paramount Theatre

Caravan du Nord is an ongoing project of The Minnesota Music Coalition. This year’s stop in Austin features Har Mar Superstar, Reina Del Cid and The Peter Jacobs Trio. The tour creates partnerships between independent musicians and presenters who are excited to engage new audiences with the artists. At the same time the program includes education for developing artists with workshops that fit the needs for each town. The workshops are Saturday at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Austin ArtWorks Center. The first will focus on promotions, and the second will focus on booking gigs. Both events will feature a panel discussion the issues with artists. Then around 4 p.m., the musicians are invited to a social hour at Dusty’s Lounge, 422 N. Main St. in Austin. Cost for the 7:30 p.m. concert is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

10. Boy Scouts of America Troop 109 Turkey Dinner

11 a.m.-1 p.m., Sunday, Westminster Presbyterian Church

The Boy Scouts of America Troop 109 Turkey Dinner tickets are $10 for adults ages 12-64, $8 for seniors ages 65 plus, $7 for children ages 6-11, $6 each for families of five or more, and children 5 years or younger are free. The menu includes Jennie-O Turkey with dressing, mashed potatoes, green beans, desserts, and juice, milk or coffee.
