HAYFIELD — The Hayfield girls basketball team had to survive a late scare as they were able to beat Glencoe-Silver Lake 54-51 to win the Hayfield tournament Wednesday.

The Vikings (7-3 overall), who have now won five straight games, took a 53-47 lead when sophomore Olivia Matti hit back-to-back three pointers, but the Vikings scored just one point in the game’s final two and half minutes as they struggled with turnovers and missed chances.

GSL (5-5 overall) missed a game-tying lay-up and McKenna Monahan missed a baseline three that would’ve tied the game as time expired. Hayfield was using its defense to keep Maddie Monahan, who scored 21 points, from getting the final shot.

“We doubled [Maddie] and said let somebody else beat us,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “They got a good look, but that’s why we thought we were going to make someone else beat us.”

Matti gave the Vikings a big boost as she scored 20 points and knocked down six three-pointers in the win.

“When I saw the zone [defense], I knew I had some open shots,” Matti said. “You can’t really drive, you’ve got to stay outside and take the open shots.”

Matti and Hayfield sophomore Maggie Streightiff, who scored 12 points on mostly mid-range jump shots, helped carry the Viking offense. Kindschy said that shooting was key in the win.

“We didn’t take care of the ball like we needed to in key stretches, but good shooting can cure a lot of ills,” he said. “Olivia Matti lit it up and she stepped her game up when we needed her too. She was the dagger that they couldn’t handle out side.”

Hayfield’s Kate Kruger had five points, four assists and four rebounds and Savanna Cordle had nine points and 12 rebounds.
