Best Bets: Chicken soup and wedding bells

Get ready to enjoy some chicken dumpling soup, a bean bag tournament and the Austin Wedding Showcase this weekend. With some warmer temperatures on the way, find a good read, listen to some great music and also celebrate past Austin High School athletes this weekend.

1. Read Any Good Books Lately?

For anyone who loves to talk to people about what they are currently reading, has read anything lately that they can’t stop thinking about, is bored with their choice of reading material, is out of ideas on what author to read next, there’s hope. Join a readers group for an informal monthly discussion about books based on the question, “Have you read any good books lately?” For more information, call 507-433-2391.

2. Author visit – Habibo Haji

4-5 p.m. Friday, Austin Public Library

Habibo Haji faced danger nearly every day during her childhood — hardship, rape, war — yet survived. From remote rural Somalia to an enormous frightening refugee camp, and then finally Minnesota, Haji has overcome incredible odds and is now working as a registered nurse at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. She will talk about her autobiography at the library Friday. For more information, call 507-433-2391.

3. Chicken dumpling soup and chili supper, fudge sale

4:30-7 p.m. Friday, Mower County Senior Center

This event is for all ages. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 4 to 12, children ages 3 and under are free. The meal includes a choice of chicken dumpling soup and/or chili, a beverage and dessert. Tickets are available at The Arc office or at the door. There will also be a fudge sale at the supper and free samples will be available.

4. 31st annual AHS Athletic Hall of Fame Celebration

6:30-9 p.m. Friday, Ove Berven Gym, Austin High School

The induction ceremony will take place at half-time of the girls’s basketball game against Faribault in the Ove Berven Gym. For more information, call Lisa Quednow at 507-460-1827.

5. Hoot & Ole’s Bean Bag Tournament and Old Fashioned Hotdish Feed

11 a.m. Saturday registration, 12 p.m. tournament, Hoot & Ole’s Smittys Teaver, 105 11th St. SE

This fundraiser for the Dutchtown Jumpers Paint the Town Pink Plunge team returns after raising more than $10,000 last year. The bean bag tournament serves as one of its biggest fundraisers of the year. Cost to compete in the bean bag tournament is $10. Partners will be drawn at random for teams. People can also come out to enjoy a hot dish for $5.

6. Austin Wedding Showcase

12-3 p.m. Sunday, Hormel Historic Home

This annual event will feature vendors and a fashion show of wedding-related items. The fashion show features the Austin Bruins. Admission is $4. For more information, call Amanda at 507-433-4243.

7. St. Olaf Band Concert

4-5:30 p.m. Sunday, Historic Paramount Theatre

This free concert will feature the well-known musical group the St. Olaf Band. For more information, call 507-434-0934.
