The Austin girls hockey team fell out of reach early on as they lost 7-1 to Bloomington-Jefferson in Riverside Arena Monday.

The Jaguars (6-11 overall) scored five straight goals to start the first period and Austin wasn’t able to get back in it.

“Against these kind of teams, we have to come out and skate all three periods,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “We’re a good team, we’ve just got to skate the whole game.”

Mara Overby had 51 saves for the Packers (8-7 overall) and Myia Houim scored the lone goal in the first period.

Austin had to play the game without its top scorer Chloe Summerfield, so the Packers had to rely on some of their younger players to play big minutes.

“It doesn’t help to have Chloe out of the game, but some younger girls are stepping up,” Vesel said. “They’ve gotten some experience.”
