5 face charges after watertower rescue

Five have been charged with trespassing after police discovered them inside the Austin water tower fence around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp, who said the Austin Fire Department was called to help the several of the suspects, believed to have been drinking, down from the tower.
Alex Carl Petersen, 20, of Albert Lea and Austin residents Ryan Tyler Berg Ethen, 20; Andrew James Dennison, 21; Greyson Thomas Orth, 21; and John Patrick Lynch, 20, have been charged with a single misdemeanor count of trespassing. Ethen and Lynch also face a minor consume charge.
Philipp said police initially spotted two men inside the 6-foot chain-linked fence, which also includes two lines of barbed wire above. Both claimed that there was only one other person at the scene, and produced an aluminum step ladder used to scale the fence and tower, Philipp stated.
Police found a third individual in the sewer below the tower, and suspected more had leapt the fence after finding a sandal that didn’t belonging to any of the males indentified. After authorities calling out several times with no response, two men eventually emerged from the tower circular staircase, according to the chief, which requires a ladder to reach.
Philipp said authorities called Austin Fire to help the two from the tower, which didn’t sustain any damage, according to Austin Utilities.
All defendants have varying July court dates.
