The Austin girls basketball team snapped a nine-game losing streak when it topped Winona 52-45 on the road Friday.
The Packers (3-15 overall, 2-10 Big Nine) had dropped five of their last 10 games by less than 10 points and this time they finally pulled out a close one.
“It was a great win and the kids have been working so hard,” Austin head coach Gary Peterson said. “It was nice to win a close one.”
Austin had three players score in double figures, but it was the defense of Meg Brucker that stood out huge. Brucker, a senior forward, held Winona’s all-time leading scorer Megan Lueck to 14 points and just one bucket in the second half.
“I told the girls if we could hold her down, then we had a chance to win it,” Peterson said. “We played great team defense.”
Winona led 28-26 at halftime.
Senior center Robin Arjes had 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Packers.
Austin scoring: Robin Arjes, 13; Babaye Oja, 13; Jenna Svoboda, 12; Kaycee Lukes, 6; Meg Brucker, 6; Taylor Lady, 2
