Katie Fedoryk continues to play hockey and find ice to skate even though the girls’ high school hockey season ended more than six weeks ago.
Fedoryk, the starting goalie for Austin High School, recently displayed her all-conference skills for the rest of the top players in the state at the the Minnesota Selects Hockey Festival in St. Cloud March 25-28.
Fedoryk, a 17-year-old junior at AHS, was one of only four players from the Big Nine Conference to be selected to play in the senior dominated tournament. Because of her age, Fedoryk was only one of three juniors on the elite team.
The four-day tournament featured the top prep players in the state, including 100-goal scorer, Krissy Wendell of Park Center.
Fedoryk more than held her own against the highly sought after prep standout. In her only meeting between Fedoryk’s South team and Wendell’s West squad, the Packers goalie shut out Minnesota’s most recognizable female prep hockey talent.
Fedoryk spent 25 minutes in net for each game, splitting time with another goalie.
"It was a lot of fun," Fedoryk said. "It was pretty nerve wracking with all of the other good players there and I wanted to play good because there were college scouts there too."
In only her third season of playing hockey, Fedoryk is building quite a resume. She has been a three-time All Big Nine selection in all three years Austin has offered girls hockey. She has also been the Packers MVP the past two years.
For her complete tournament performance, Fedoryk handled the spotlight well, giving up only six goals.
Besides playing for Austin, Fedoryk also plays for a "showcase" team, which features the top Big Nine players and she also finds time for the "premier" state team. Both teams play games during the spring and fall.
In the summer, Fedoryk plays on a Olympic Development Program team.
