The Austin High girls tennis team split a triangular with Waseca and Northfield on Saturday at Wescott Field.
The Packers beat Northfield 6-1 to start the day.
In the afternoon against Waseca, Austin switched their regular lineup around. Laurie Alonso and Amy Kelly, the Packers’ top two singles players, teamed up at No. 1 doubles, while Austin’s regular top doubles tandem of Chelsea McColley and Mindy Neilon played at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively.
The switch backfired for the Packers, as they lost 4-3 to the Bluejays.
Still, Austin coach Deb Hoyt said an occasional switch is necessary.
"These weekend things are supposed to be fun," Hoyt said. "And it’s always good to have different girls ready in case of an injury.
"Plus, I think playing singles helps doubles players play better and vice versa."
Despite the split with the two non-conference opponents, Hoyt was pleased with Austin’s showing.
"We played well against Northfield," she said. "On the whole we played good, but I thought we would beat Waseca even with the switching."
Austin (7-4, 5-0 Big Nine) will face Rochester Century at Wescott Field on Tuesday.
