The Austin Packers are rolling through the Big Nine in tennis. Tuesday at Wescott Field their latest victim, Rochester Century, was beaten 5-2. The triumph improves the Packers Big Nine record to a perfect 6-0. They are 8-4 overall.
The No. 2 and 3 Austin singles players, Amy Kelly and Emily Bue, didn’t lose a game in their matches.
Their matches were so swift that, "Mindy Neilon told me that during a change in the first set of her doubles match, she saw them both walking off the court," Austin coach Deb Hoyt said.
Neilon teamed with Chelsea McColley to win in straight sets at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-2. The No. 3 doubles team, Amber Dolphin and Claire Johnson also won in straight sets, two and two. The No. 2 doubles team of Lindy Swedberg and Tiffany Ankeny were on the losing end of a tough three-set match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
"Our doubles are playing well together," Hoyt said. "They are being aggressive at the net."
The fifth Austin point came from the racket of No. 1 singles player Laurie Alonso. She defeated her opponent three and two.
The other Century point came at No. 4 singles where Erika Mayerle defeated Betsy Hingeveld.
The Packers (8-4, 6-0) travel to Albert Lea on Thursday before hosting Blue Earth on Saturday.
