Two horses and a domesticated deer were saved, but the two goats died in a barn fire at the Bruce Hovland farm Tuesday morning. The Austin Fire Department and members of the Mower County Sheriff’s department responded to a call reporting the fire on Highway 105 South shortly after 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Hovland had been burning a brush pile when the wind picked up some of the burning embers, depositing them on the roof of the 20×30-foot barn.
There were no damage estimates available, but witnesses said the barn looked like a total loss.
