The Austin girls swim team wrapped up its state appearance on Wednesday.

Freshman Meghan Walsh, competing in three races, capped her terrific season with an eighth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and an 11th-place finish in the 100 butterfly. Walsh’s 200 IM finish earned her All-State recognition.

"That’s real good for a freshman," Austin coach Lynn Gulbrandson said. "Actually, that’s real good for anybody. I’d hate to put a grade on it."

Walsh swam a time of 2 minutes, 17.61 seconds in the 200 IM and a 1:02.50 in the butterfly.

Walsh, swimming the 50-yard butterfly leg, also helped Austin’s 200 medley relay team to a 12th place finish. Backstroker Becky Sanford, breaststroker Amy Martin and freestyler Lauren Geottsch competed with Walsh in the race.

The relay finished with a time of 1:57.75.

Austin scored 27 team points in the state meet and finished 27th; more than 50 teams earned points.

Only relays and racers that reached the finals or consolations earned points for their team. Each event Wednesday included a finals race (for the top eight preliminary swimmers) and a consolation race (for the eighth through 16th-place prelim finishers). Prelims were swam on Tuesday.

"This group of girls came to state capable of scoring team points," Gulbrandson said. "In the past, we’ve been able to get into the state, but we didn’t always come with the idea of scoring points."
