The area’s top two volleyball teams – on a collision course all season – will meet Thursday in a sub-section championship match.

Hayfield and Blooming Prairie, the top two seeds in the Section 2A, 5AA East Sub-Section, both won Saturday to force the long-awaited finale.

Neither team had it easy in Saturday’s semifinals.

Top-seeded Hayfield downed No. 5 Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in five games, 15-3, 12-15, 15-1, 7-15, 15-11.

The second-seeded Blossoms beat No. 6 Kasson-Mantorville 9-15, 15-9, 15-10, 15-12.

Sheri Swanson led the Vikings with 19 kills. Fellow 6-footer Kristin Petersen added 12 kills.

Hayfield’s outside hitter Kristin Peterson finished with 13 kills. Megan Follmuth had 14 service points for the Vikings, including five in a row in the final game.

For the Blossoms, Ranelle Goette had 18 kills and seven blocks, while Jana Peterson finished with 11 kills, five blocks and five ace serves.

The sub-section final will be played at Gustavus-Adolphus in St. Peter at 8 p.m.
