The following obituaries appeared in the December
21, 1999 edition of the Austin Daily Herald.
Gordon Buchanan, 67
Gordon A. Buchanan, 67, of Cass Lake, formerly of Austin, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999 at North Country Regional Hospital.
He was born April 10, 1932, at Austin, to John and Daisy Buchanan. He graduated from Austin High School and then spent four years in the Air Force. When he was discharged from the military, he worked for Sig Repair, Austin Cab Co. and Dibble Buick-Pontiac before going to work for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources as a game warden. He moved to Cass Lake in 1962.
On June 6, 1970, he married Millie Larson of Austin, who joined him in Cass Lake. He was a conservation officer for the 37 years in Cass Lake. He was member of Cass Lake American Legion and Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a school board member for three years and taught gun and snowmobile safety classes.
Survivors include his wife; a son, John of England; a daughter Stephanie of Bemidji; four brothers, Duane (Violet) of Oakland, Minn., John (Jeanette) of Springfield, Ark., Earl "Bud" Britt, Iowa, Neil (Marcy) of Rogers, Ark., a sister Irene Ostgard of Rochester: sisters-in-law Jan Larson of Spring Lake Park, Minn., and Shirley Finnegan of Austin; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
· Service: Services were held at 11 a.m. Dec. 13, 1999 at St. Charles Catholic Chruch in Cass Lake with the Rev. Mike Nelson of Trinity Lutheran Chruch officiating.
· Interment: Pine Grove Cemetery at Cass Lake.
Wanda Enfield, 71
Wanda Beth Enfield, 71, of LeRoy, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
She was born to Warren and Pauline (Spencer) Harden in LeRoy. she graduated from LeRoy High School in 1946 and married Loren Enfield in November 1946. To this union seven children were born. They later divorced. A member of Austin Christian Fellowship Church, Wanda worked at Ankeny’s, at St. Olaf Hospital as a housekeeper and as a home health aide through Mower County. Hobbies included crocheting, knitting and playing cards. She enjoyed her family and her cats. Her grandchildren were one of her greatest joys.
She is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Larry and Gwen Enfield, Ramsey, Michael and Cindy Enfield, Austin, David and Ginny Enfield, Brooklyn Park, Steve and Dianna Enfield, New Richland, Dan and Deb Enfield, Mapleview, Tom Enfield, Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Randy Deters, Brownsdale; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; special friend, Dean Britt, LeRoy; brother and sister-in-law Vern and Ellen Harden, Kansas City, Mo.; sisters and brother-in-law Ruth Timmerman, Streamwood, Ill.; Bev and Butch Fritchet, Lime Springs, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Casket bearers are Matt Enfield, Tim Enfield, Jason Enfield, Justin Enfield, Jeff Kropp and Jay Wangsness. Honor bearers are Brianna Enfield, Amy Kropp, Sherry Wangsness, Heather Deters and Amanda Deters, Tara Deters.
· Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999 at Bethlehem Free Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Ekern of Austin Christian Fellowship officiating.
· Interment: LeRoy Cemetery.
· Visitation: Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Worlein Funeral Home and at the church one hour before the service.

Louis Streightiff, 63
Louis Samuel Streightiff, 63, of Brownsdale died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, Brownsdale; sons and daughter-in-law Dan Streightiff, Rochester, Dave Streightiff, Brownsdale, Doug and Kris Streightiff, Sargeant; Daughters and sons-in-law Deb (Mrs. Larry) Sherman, Grand Rapids, Darcy (Mrs. Jim) Richardson, Grand Meadow; eight grandchildren; brothers Vernon Streightiff, Austin, Franklin Streightiff, St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers Bill Nason, Gerald Weinmann, Harold Jarvis, Ken Apold, Robert Rosel, Dan Clayton.
Honorary Bearers will be grandchildren, Zach, Brandon, Koby, Molly, Drew, Maggie, Sydney, and Wyatt.
· Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999 at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Brownsdale with the Rev. Bert Boschert officiating.
· Interment: Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield with Hayfield American Legion Rothie Post No.330
· Visitation: Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, 1999 at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Brownsdale and one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday. There will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home on Tuesday.
Rose Emma Johnson, 88
Rose Emma Johnson, 88, of Hayfield, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 1999, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester.
She was born June 16, 1911 in Woodhull, Ill. to August William and Olga (Magnusson) Johnson. She married Kenneth A. Johnson on Nov. 28, 1936 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield.
Rose was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1925. She graduated from Hayfield High School. She and her husband farmed south of Oslo, Minn. for 54 years. They retired in 1990 and moved to Hayfield. Rose entered Field Crest Care Center, in 1996. She was a homemaker and belonged to Circle at church. She enjoyed crocheting and flower gardening.
She is survived by her daughter Mrs. Darrell (Ramona) Jacobson, Blooming Prairie; sons Willard (wife Diane) Johnson, Mission Veijo, Calif., David (wife) Tamara Johnson, Hudson, Wis.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth died in 1993, infant grandson, two sisters, and one brother.
· Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hayfield, Minn. with the Rev. Stephan Sandness officiating.
· Interment: Fairview Cemetery in Hayfield
· Visitation: Friends may call from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999, at the Czaplewski Family Funeral Home in Hayfield and one hour before the service at the church on Thursday.
William Nargan, 87
William J. Nargan, 87, of 2104 10th St. SW, died Saturday evening, Dec. 18, 1999 at his home.
He was born July 26, 1912 in Grunday Center, Iowa to John William and Laura (Smith) Nargan. In August of 1930 he moved to Austin. He married Marie A. Helebrant on July 29, 1935 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Bill worked for the Austin Daily Herald for 42 years before retiring.
He is survived by his wife Marie; daughter and son-in-law Trudy and Bernie O’Neill of Austin, Texas; son and daughter-in-law William and Alice Nargan, Rochester; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law LaVerne and Gaylin Knoll of Hudson, Iowa.
· Service: A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 1999 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Paul Nelson of St. Augustine Catholic Church officiating.
· Interment: Calvary Cemetery.
· Visitation: Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday and one hour before the service on Wednesday. There will be a 6:30 p.m. wake service this evening at Mayer Funeral Home where friends may call from 5-7 p.m. today and one hour before the service on Wednesday.
Henry L. Stahl, 76
Henry L. Stahl, 76, of 1100 24th Ave. SW, Austin, died Saturday, Dec. 18, at Prairie Manor in Blooming Prairie.
He was born Sept. 10, 1923 at Grundy Center, Iowa, to Fred and Triene (Halfwassen) Stahl. He married Catherine DeBoer Nov. 28, 1942 in Brownsdale.
They lived in Austin, farmed southwest of Austin and near Dexter before they moved back to Austin. Henry took a job as a mechanic at Durben Back Service, where he worked for 45 years. He belonged to the Moose, Eagles and VFW. A "Mr. Fixit," he liked to work on things. His other hobbies were gardening and dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine, sons and daughters-in-law Roger and Lou Stahl, Kenneth and Linjee Stahl, David and Sara Shaw, all of Austi, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, sister Helen Tufteskog, Salem, Ore.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, six brothers and a sister.
· Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, with Rev. Harald Usgaard officating.
· Visitation: There will be no visitation or reviewal.
· Interment: Grandview Cemetery
Worlein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Alice Strangman, 95
Alice K. Strangman, 95, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1999 at Austin Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 18, 1904 in Lytton, Iowa the only child of Henry and Marie Schramm. She was baptized at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Sac County, Iowa by Pastor J. Volk. In Lytton her father had a wagon and buggy shop. On the advice of his physician to get more fresh air her father purchased a farm ten miles east of Austin. In February 1911 she moved to that location with her parents.
She attended Maple leaf School District 106 for elementary school and was instructed in the Christian faith at Trinity Lutheran Chruch, Dexter Township. She was confirmed in 1919 by the Pastor Theodore Engel. If the fall of 1921 she entered high school at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn., a member of the first group of girls enrolled at that institution. She completed one year before returning home to live whit her parents.
In 1922 she began to play the organ at church, accompanying the choir. For the next 65 years she played for Sunday services, weddings and funerals.
On Sept. 1, 1927 she married Irvin John Strangman at Trinity Lutheran Church. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Rudolf Schroeder. Following their marriage they lived on the farm, where she had resided with her parents, until 1971, when they moved to the home in southwest Austin where she resided till a week before she died.
Throughout her life she was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In addition being the church organist for many hears, she taught Sunday School and was active in the Ladies Aid Society.
On Dec. 18, 1999, at the age of 95 years, she was taken to her heavenly home.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law Eugene and Kathryn, Madison, Wis.; Walter and Sharon, Minneota; five grandchildren; four great-grandsons
· Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, 1999 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dexter Township.
· Interment: Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
· Visitation: Friends may call at Worlein Funeral Home in Austin Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. and at the church one hour before the service.
