The Austin wrestling team swept a double-dual meet in Prior Lake on Tuesday, beating Northfield first, 41-14, then the host school, 32-25.
The victories upped the Packers record to 16-4, tying the school record for victories in a season set in 1995-96, when Austin went 16-7.
The Packers could break the record when they host Mayo at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Ove Berven Gym. The Spartans should be no match for Austin, but you won’t hear that from any Packer.
"We never taken anybody for granted," Coach Bill Kinney said. "But we want to finish strong."
Austin added two impressive pelts to its remarkable season with its sweep. Like Austin, Prior Lake and Northfield have gotten Top 10 state ranking votes this season.
After dispatching Northfield, Austin’s match with Prior Lake went to the wire.
And for a moment, it looked as if the Packers were beaten when the referee ruled Austin heavyweight Brian E. Heimer pinned in the first period. But the fall came seconds after the period ended; the referee hadn’t heard the buzzer because of a frenzied crowd. The scorers’ table reversed the ref’s decision, giving Heimer new life.
Heimer promptly pinned Rob Bennet 30 seconds into the second period. The pin secured Austin’s victory.
"It felt good," Kinney said. "These were a couple of real good wins and it made for a great night for the team."
If Austin wins Thursday, it will mark the second time Kinney-coached teams have set the school record, which had been previously established with 13 wins way back in 1973.
