Junior Mary McKee and seventh grader Chris Bergstrom placed for their second straight meets in events they’ve just begun to train in.

McKee finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles at the 11-team Kasson-Mantorville Invite, finishing in 54.94 seconds.

"She’s got a lot of promise," Lyle/Pacelli coach Joe Moss said. "It was only the second time she’d run it and she dropped a second off her previous time.

"She’s only going to improve."

McKee dropped her time even though she couldn’t use proper form.

Because of the frigid weather, McKee couldn’t get her legs completely stretched out. So instead of letting her trail leg fly out almost horizontal to the ground, she simply tucked it and ran.

It wasn’t a problem because McKee, Moss said, is jumping higher than she needs to in order to clear the hurdles.

Bergstrom is jumping higher than anyone could have expected too.

He finished in a tie for fourth in the high jump on Tuesday, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches.

"He’s got a lot of potential too," Moss said. "He’s young and only going to get better."

GMLO splits in softball

The Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander softball team split a home doubleheader on Tuesday in Ostrander, losing to Spring Grove/Caledonia 6-1 and winning 8-3.

GMLO got just one hit in the opening game, before getting five in the second. Kelly Davis led the way in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

"It was nasty out," Coach Bill Benkstein said. "We had trouble getting motivated to hit in the first game."

GMLO pitcher Lindsay Mensink got the second-game win, allowing five hits.

Also Monday, GMLO baseball swept Spring Grove/Caledonia, 7-3 and 13-8.

Tony Miller got GMLO started with a three-run homer in the first game.

The Blooming Prairie boys were defeated by Triton 166 to 185.

Nick Nelson led the way for Blooming Prairie with a 44. Eric Hoffman earned medalist honors with a 37.
