The Austin baseball team lost to host Winona, 8-2, on Thursday.
Austin took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an unearned run. But the edge was short lived.
In the bottom of the first, Kevin Spahr hit a three-run home run off Austin starter Clint Ripley, who was chased after three more Winona hits and runs in the second inning.
Reliever Nick Rohne slowed down the Winhawks over the final four innings, surrendering just two unearned runs.
Andy Brede had two of Austin’s five hits, both doubles. Mark Toov added an RBI single.
Austin (6-6, 6-5 in the Big Nine) plays four times next week, beginning Monday at Rochester Century.
Austin golfers defeated
The Austin boys golf team lost to Albert Lea at Green Lea on Thursday, 309 to 317.
Medalist honors went to Albert Lea’s Justin Bennett, who carted at 76.
"A very disappointing day," Austin coach Claudia Pilot said. "We should score real well on this golf course, but it wasn’t there today, nobody had a good day.
"The good news is, there are many chances for them to redeem themselves next week, with a busy week ahead."
Austin goes to the Eden Prairie Invitational on Monday to play at Olympic Hills.

Austin tennis team wins
The Austin boys’ tennis team picked up its first win of the season in Albert Lea on Thursday, downing the Tigers 6-1.
"The guys played great," Coach Deb Hoyt said. "They were able to take control of their matches early and maintain their momentum."
