Austin area charities brought home the bacon Monday evening.
Following the Pigs in the City event at Riverside Arena, charities have $2,700 more to work with thanks to local businesses and auctioneer Art Hollerud. About 40 decorated concrete pigs were proudly displayed for area residents attending to vote and bid on.
Palleton of Minnesota walked away with the blue ribbon for their "Elpig" entry, an Elvis Presley impersonating pig.
Pelleton’s pig was designed by Julie Thompsen and featured a Presley-esque white jumpsuit, jet-black pompadour and sunglasses.
Another winner at the arena was the Mary Nelson-designed "Hy-Vee Roadhog – The Low-Price Porker" – a true hog lovers’ hog, sporting black leather, tattoos and plenty of attitude.
More than pigs took home prizes though, following the judging those who voted were treated to a raffle with prizes ranging from Austin Area Chamber of Commerce "Chamber Bucks" to a night at the Austin Holiday Inn’s whirlpool suite.
The finished pigs will be displayed today through October throughout Austin at sites selected by their sponsors. A map of their locations featuring Palleton’s "Elpig" on the cover will be available in June for visitors and curious locals alike.
