Newly re-elected Mower County Commissioner Richard Cummings said he doesn’t tire of the challenges of representing District No. 1, because of the "new issues that come before the county board."
Cummings won re-election to the county board Tuesday by defeating challenger John O’Rourke by an unofficial tally of 2,374 to 1,213, according to the Mower County auditor’s office.
Cummings won every voting precinct in District No. 1.
The individual precinct results were:
Austin Ward 1 Precinct: 916 to 637; city of Brownsdale 253 to 99; Lansing Township 461 to 190; city of Mapleview 55 to 20; Red Rock Township 301 to 120; Udolpho Township 170 to 69; city of Waltham 66 to 27; Waltham Township 152 to 51.
In winning another four-year term on the county board, Cummings capped 24 years of elective office and many elections in which he has always had opposition in either the primary or general elections.
Ironically, the very last voting precinct to turn in totals from Tuesday’s election was Lansing Township, where the county commissioner and his wife, Josie, live.
Lansing Township’s votes were not recorded until 5 a.m. today.
District No. 2
Raymond Tucker won a second term in office Tuesday.
Tucker, who was unopposed, received 3,489 votes.
The incumbent county commissioner represents the largest district geographically in the county.
He won his first four-year term on the county board by upsetting an incumbent, Herb Hanson (now deceased) four years ago.
Tucker said he wants to continue to work hard to "upgrade the county’s infrastructure.
He also said he would initiate efforts to create "opportunities for economic development" in the out-county area.
