Two residential burglaries were reported in the last two days in Mower County communities.

Margaret Hanson-Johnson reported several pieces of Waterford crystal and jewelry missing from her home. Hanson-Johnson lives along Highway 218 north of Lyle.

Her front door was kicked in and some rooms were ransacked. No value has been reported yet, but Hanson-Johnson will be compiling a list of missing items for the Mower County Sheriff’s Department.

Luther Thompson, 78, of rural Dexter, reported the theft of a 17th century Dutch Linberger Ducatus map from his residence.

Thompson said that four framed maps were on a kitchen chair and when he decided to move them, he found that one was missing.

The map in question carried a French inscription on the reverse side.

The possible theft is under investigation.

Laptop computer stolen

at Riverland

Amanda Voigt reported that her business-issue, black laptop computer was stolen between 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday.

Voigt said that the laptop was left unattended in the lab in a carrying case. When she returned to the lab to retrieve it, the carrying case was empty.

Co-workers in the lab reported that three men were wandering around in the lab during the time in question, but the investigation is ongoing.

Slippery roads and wind make travel dangerous

Mower County Sheriff Barry Simonson warned motorists this morning to drive with caution on county highways and Interstate 90.

Several cars skidded onto the shoulder or into ditches as a result of high winds polishing the already snow-laden roads.
