Sometimes it’s amazing what kids can do. Take Target Market as an example.
A bunch of teens against big tobacco’s push of its product toward youth is taking aim squarely at the cigarette producers, telling them in an "in-your-face" message that they’re tired of being the victims of tobacco advertising aimed at youthful smokers.
The message these teens are putting across is important and one that should not be taken lightly. They’ve assembled thousands of fellow teens across the state who are working to get out their message.
The local teens involved with Target Market in Austin and Grand Meadow took their message to the Austin City Council this week and walked away with interest from council members in doing something here in Austin.
Councilman Wayne Goodnature suggested that perhaps an ordinance preventing smoking in restaurants would be good for Austin. Councilwoman Gloria Nordin chimed in that she had an example of such ordinances that she would share with her colleagues.
OK, council members, let’s not offer lip service. Let’s take a look at the possibility of clearing the air in Austin eateries. When can we see some action on this matter? The youth have spoken. Don’t let them down.
