Weather a sports problem

There’s a saying in Iowa that goes something like if you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes.
Unfortunately, local high school and college athletes are tired of waiting. This week marks the first official week of the spring sports season, but not too many athletes will be able to compete yet. Fields still have snow in them and even those fields that don’t have much snow in them are going to be too wet for any games.
Local athletes have been working out in gyms and hallways in an effort to get ready for the spring season, however, there’s nothing like actually working out outside where you play your games.
Members of the Lyle/Pacelli golf team took off for Rochester’s Golf Dome last week in an effort to get some well-needed practice in. We hope our other young athletes can get the practice they need for the spring season and that the weather improves so full seasons can get under way.
While the Austin High School boys tennis team expects to be able to travel to Decorah, Iowa, on Thursday for its season opener, other teams won’t be as fortunate. While conditions in Iowa are a little better and will allow the match to be played, local competitions won’t get out the door this week.
In fact, many teams probably will have to look at some rescheduling to get their games in this season. Some tactics might involve double headers. It might involve some creative tactics, too. In the end, we hope whatever is done is to the benefit of our young athletes. They deserve it.
