Disney, Motown and the Beatles.

No, it's not the playlist for a college radio station. It's the lineup for the Austinaires' spring performance.

Since mid-January, the Austinaires, Austin High School's choral group, have worked on perfecting their spring concert.

Brian Johnson, choir director, says the show "uses show choir elements and focuses on popular music. There are selections from Disney movies, like 'Aladdin,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' and 'The Little Mermaid.' Part of the show pays tribute to the Beatles and there is music from the Motown era. It's quite a variety."

It's also different from the Austinaires' usual fare. "Last year we focused on stage musicals and I don't like to do the same thing every year," Johnson says. "After a number of years it's hard to keep finding new things from stage musicals. This is a change of pace."

Senior Austinaires member Angie McDermott agrees. "I don't ever remember the Austinaires doing Disney songs," she says. "It's a little more colorful, a little more fun, and it's a chance for us to do something different from the usual classical choir stuff."

Alexander Watson, an Austinaires senior, says audience members will enjoy the show because "we're doing familiar tunes (they) can recognize and hum along with."

Johnson adds, "When we really get going, there's something about their singing and dancing that's infectious. They have a lot of fun and that enthusiasm spreads to the audience. They're especially good with showmanship and have a high quality of performance on stage."

Watson also says it's important for the audience to realize that "looking at an Austinaires show, you see such a cross-section of the student body. If the audience goes in knowing we're all so diverse in our activities outside of the Austinaires, I think it makes it that much more enjoyable."

The Austinaires will perform their show, entitled "I Got the Music in Me," at 7:30 p.m. on April 18, 19 and 20 in the Christgau Hall at AHS. The shows also will feature the Choralaires, a group of sophomore, junior and senior girls who will sing similar music; a group of junior boys known as "The Perfect Fourth"; as well as senior members of the Austinaires, soloists and duets. Tickets are $3 for senior citizens and students and $5 for adults. Tickets can purchased at Nemitz's, from the high school cashier or at the door. For more information, call 433-0400.
