One of the things listed on Claire Johnson's goal sheet for this season was to beat teammate Brittany Bertilson in a meet this season.

One meet, one goal down.

Johnson's career-best round of 44-40--84 earned her meet medalist honors in Austin's first golf meet of the season, a 357-394 defeat of guest Rochester Century Monday at the Austin Country Club. Johnson edged Bertilson by one stroke for the top overall honor.

"She was very happy and excited with her score, she even told me it could have been better than it was," said AHS coach Mark Anderson. "I am very proud of her. She has worked very hard and deserves to shoot scores like that."

Bertilson shot 43-42--85 to earn runner-up honors as Austin shot 12 strokes better than its scoring average last season.

"Brittany had a good first day also," Coach Anderson said. "She has set the whole tone for our team this year by having the girls on the team wanting to beat her. It makes them play much more focused golf."

Noelle Wiebelhaus added a 93 and Carissa Gabrielson jumped into the foreground with a 95 -- her career low in her first varsity meet.

"We are going to work hard at our short game the next couple of weeks to see if we can't get a few more strokes off our scores," Anderson added. "I'm very pleased with this effort."

The Packers (1-0, 1-0) play Tuesday at Mankato East.

Jamie Knutson shot 43, Shawn Pfeil a 49, and Kyle Fett added a 51 to L/P's team score.

Tyler Klingsen led G-E with a 48.

"The back nine is pretty tough, and the conditions were windy, so Tom's score of 40 was a really good round," said L/P coach Mark Buntje. "And Jamie's score of 43 was pretty good too."

"That was a good win for us, it puts in in the right direction for the conference now."

L/P (2-1, 1-1) plays Friday at home against LeRoy-Ostrander.
