Third-seeded LOGM upended by Goodhue

Goodhue's one good inning was good enough to get the Wildcats through to the second round of Section 1A West Sub-Section baseball as the sixth-seeded squad stopped third-seeded LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow by a 5-3 score Tuesday night at Marcusen Park in Austin.

The Bulldogs (13-7) were limited to five hits by Goodhue's Troy Stehr, who struck out nine in the complete-game victory. Stehr managed to outduel LOGM's Ryan King, who allowed eight hits while striking out 11.

Goodhue struck first and foremost, scoring four deciding runs in the top of the second inning en route to the upset victory.

"There's always been one inning somewhere, that's the story of our season," said LOGM first-year coach Dan Dow. "We played for the big inning, but the big inning never came."

LOGM left 10 runners stranded on base throughout the game, unable to come up with the clutch hit they needed. Anthony Stejskal twice came up with runners in scoring position, but tough defensive plays by Goodhue's first baseman salvaged the Wildcat lead on both occasions.

"Their first baseman saved them about eight runs with those plays," Dow said.

Goodhue stranded seven runners on, but managed to make good on their first opportunity in the second inning. Dan Strouss' two-run double capped a series of three hits and two walks to knock LOGM into the losers' bracket. The Bulldogs get a bye and will play Saturday at 11 a.m. at Marcusen Park against the loser of the Blooming Prairie/Medford game.

"We didn't get the hits we'd normally get," Dow said. "We have to give a little credit to the Goodhue pitcher. He had us off-balance all night."

King led LOGM's offense with two of the five hits. Jacob Rowe, Adam Schlee and Grand Lunning accounted for the Bulldogs' other singles. Schlee drove in Bob Theobald with their first run on a single in the second, while Theobald's fielder's choice grounder in the seventh plated King as the 'Dogs' final run.
