She is the first female officer in the history of the Austin Police Department.

"I don't feel any more pressure than usual. Not too much, at least. With the training to come, I'll be all right," Morgan said.

Tom Dankert, city finance director, swore in the new officer Monday in ceremonies held in council chambers at Austin Municipal Building.

Austin Mayor Bonnie Rietz welcomed a large contingent of family and friends of Morgan and congratulated the city's newest officer.

Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp extended his congratulations to Morgan.

The new officer is a native of Austin, who grew up at Mankato, where she graduated Minnesota State University in May.

Morgan, 23. worked as an MSU campus security officer, while completing her law enforcement studies.

Her boyfriend, Phil Jergenson, is a deputy with the Anoka County Sheriff's Department.

Morgan is the first peace officer in her family.

She said "meeting people day-to-day other than the one's you encounter officially" is one aspect of the job the new officer welcomes.
