The Austin Jaycee All-Stars baseball team finished third in the 20-team Can-Am Tourney in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, over the weekend. The Jaycee All-Stars won their division with wins over two Canadian teams and Duluth Central.

The Jaycees led West St. Paul 6-3 in the championship round Saturday night, but thunderstorms moved into the area delaying the finish of the game until early Sunday morning. The Stars held on for the 6-3 win and moved into the final four of the tournament. The team then lost to Duluth East 6-1.

"I think the jet lag finally caught up to the kids," said coach Gabby Weiss. "We had been playing really well, but the Saturday night delay and the early Sunday morning start took its toll. Our pitchers had trouble finding the plate and our bats went silent, we just looked at too many strikes.

"MacEagon Voyce, Kyle Swatfager, Brian Voigt and Cody Retterath rally pitched great, and we had strong defense. Sam Stier, Catherine Wagner, Danny Hays, John Kirby and the four pitchers led the hitting, and Jeremy Srock smacked one over the fence for a home run in bracket play."

The 25-12 Jaycee All-Stars will end season play in Albert Lea on August 3. The team is coached by Weiss, Greg Marx and Lefty Kelly, with assistance from Larry Voigt.
