The Austin Greyhounds resume their quest for the Minnesota Baseball Association Class B State Tournament championship when they face Southern Minny League rival Waseca tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud.
Austin advanced into the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 12-inning win over Hutchinson in the opening round Sunday. Craig Selk's grand slam with no outs in the bottom of the 12th sent the 'Hounds over the top.
Waseca (23-10) split the regular-season meetings with Austin, including a 4-3 controversy-filled victory in their most recent match July 17. The Greyhound (34-17) won their first affair, 5-4, in Austin.
With a win, Austin will be able to rest its pitchers until Saturday, Aug. 31 -- the final weekend of the state tournament. A loss will send either the 'Hounds or Waseca into the loser's bracket of the double-elimination tournament to face Burnsville Sunday at 11 a.m.
Two-time defending Class B champion Cold Spring was eliminated Thursday night by the Chaska Cubs, 7-3. The top-ranked Springers had lost just five times entering the 2002 state tournament, but losses to Bemidji and Chaska ended their postseason run.
Hutchinson, Austin's first-round victim, remained alive by eliminating Red Wing, 5-2, Thursday. In other loser's bracket matches, Burnsville defeated St. Cloud Ultimate 7-3, and Mankato outdueled Dassel-Cokato 1-0 in 12 innings.
