Secret service visits Ney

Jennifer LeAnn Ney, a candidate in the September primary election, was questioned by two Secret Service agents late Monday night at the Countryside Inn Motel where she lives with her father.

Earlier Monday, the agents questioned Capt. Curt Rude of the Austin Police Department about Ney and he accompanied them to the motel at 11:30 p.m. Monday. There, the agents spent about two hours interviewing Ney, collecting documents and taking photographs.

Ney, who admits to being the subject of an investigation by the Secret Service after a 2000 incident involving the George W. Bush campaign in Iowa, was outraged by the late-night interrogation.

"They had no right to do that. Do they talk to everybody in the middle of the night?" she said.

Later Monday, Ney went to St. Paul to file complaints with the Secretary of State and Minnesota Attorney General's offices.

She said she is being denied air-time on KAAL television, an ABC affiliate in Austin.

While the state agencies confirmed for the Austin Daily Herald Ney was at their offices, they say they directed her to the Federal Communications Commission and no official action was taken on behalf of the candidate.

All other complaints about possible election wrong-doing must first be filed with the county attorney of record. The Mower County Attorney's office said Ney has not filed a complaint.

Ney moved to Austin in October 2001 and immediately made her presence known at Austin City Council meetings and with the local media.

Gary Peterson, news director for KAAL, confirmed the station has had contacts with Ney.

Peterson also said Ney has not been denied air-time and that attempts to reach her before the filing deadline were unsuccessful.

He said he would "consider" granting her coverage if she legitimately becomes a news maker under the guidelines of the station's coverage of news personalities and events.
