A 50-year-old man remains in the Mower County Jail after being arrested for felony assault of his 81-year-old father.
According to a Mower County Sheriff's Department report, deputies made two visits to the rural Austin home of the man's parents Friday after complaints from the occupants and other family members.
On the second trip, Austin canine officer Renee Phan and his canine partner, Joker, were dispatched to the scene. When officers arrived, the suspect fled the house on foot and ran into a nearby cornfield. The canine unit caught up with the man and pulled him to the ground until officers arrived to handcuff him and take him to jail.
The sheriff's department complaint accused the man of striking his 81-year-old father in the mouth, knocking out a tooth. He also is alleged to have shoved his elderly mother into cupboards in the kitchen and to have struck other adult family members attempting to intervene.
The suspect arrived in Austin last week from Missouri to visit his parents. The argument broke out near mid-day Friday over some valuable coins kept by the elderly couple.
According to the Sheriff's Department report, he faces felony assault charges on his father, plus lesser charges of assault on the other family members, and an additional felony assault charge for striking the canine unit.
