Burnette O. Anderson, 101
Burnette Olga Anderson, 101, of Austin, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, St. Ansgar, Iowa.
She was born Aug. 28, 1901, in Lyle Township, to John and Lena (Martin) Hanson.
She attended the Gregg Country School near Lyle. After completing her education, she helped on the family farm until her marriage to Albert Anderson on Aug. 30, 1932, at the Lutheran church parsonage in Lyle.
The couple lived and farmed in Nevada Township until 1941, when they moved to farm in Adams Township. Albert died Jan. 21, 1955.
Burnette continued to live on the family farm until moving to Adams in 1971. In 1981, she moved to the St. Mark's Lutheran Apartments in Austin. On June 11, 2002, she moved to the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in St. Ansgar, Iowa.
She was a member of Six-Mile Grove Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid of rural Lyle. While living in Austin, she attended St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
Survivors include children, John (Jeanine) Anderson, Adams; Beverly Kohoutek, Mason City, Iowa; David (Charlotte) Anderson, Adams; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son in infancy; great-grandson, Aaron Van Proosdy; son-in-law, John Kohoutek; six brothers and sisters.
Visitation: One hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.
Service: 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Six-Mile Grove Lutheran Church of rural Lyle with Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating.
Interment: In the church cemetery.

George J. Hangge, 83
George J. Hangge, 83, of Austin, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.
George was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Mitrovik, Yugoslavia to Barney Sr. and Katherine (Schumacher) Hangge.
On July 30, 1946, he married Muriel Reagan.
George was a retired employee of Hormel Foods. He was a lifetime member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945, was a volunteer coach for Austin Youth Hockey Assn. and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include wife, Muriel Hangge, Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Sue Hangge, Arden Hills; daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Jim Colling, Jordan; Joanne and Al Hall, Plymouth; five grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lucille Cress, Austin; Alberta and Vern Gavin, Austin; Annie and Louis Grund, Emmons, Iowa; Vera Bissen, Austin; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Virginia Hangge, St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Barney Jr. and Frank Hangge.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. tonight, Sept. 23, 2002, with a 7 p.m. wake service and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father William Becker officiating. The casket bearers will be Marty Reagan, John Reagan, Steve Grund, Larry Gavin, Tom Hangge and Dan Cress.
Interment: Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91.

Melvin L. Schmeling, 86
Melvin L. Schmeling, 86, of rural Waltham, died Friday, Sept., 20, 2002, at Prairie Manor Nursing Home, Blooming Prairie.
He was born Nov. 13, 1915, in Waltham, to William Schmeling and Selma Garbisch.
He married Mildred Jukes on May 24, 1936, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church in rural Waltham.
He was a lifelong resident of Waltham where he was a farmer.
He belonged to St. Michaels Lutheran Church in rural Waltham.
Survivors include sons, Robert (Elaine) Schmeling, Blooming Prairie; Donald (Cheryl) Schmeling, Sumter, S.C.; daughter, Barbara (Donald) Eddy, Georgetown, Texas; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Glen Schmeling, Hayfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; son, Roger; three brothers; and one sister.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., today, Sept. 23, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.
Service: 2 p.m., Tuesday, at St. Michaels Lutheran Church, rural Waltham, with the Rev. John Heruth officiating.
Interment: St. Michaels Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Waltham.

Bette J. Ulland, 61
Bette Jane Ulland, age 61, of Superior, Wis., died Sept. 19, 2002, in Temecula, Calif. She was born Oct. 11, 1940, in Austin, Minn., to Truman R. and Evelyn (Schnorenberg) Lee. She was raised in Austin and graduated from Austin High School. On July 8, 1959, Bette was united in marriage to Robert O. Ulland at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church, also in Austin. They were residents of Cloquet, Minn. from 1965 to 1994; they had lived in Superior, Wis. since 1994.
Bette was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet, the Duluth Women's Club, the Cloquet Women's Friday Club and P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter E, of Superior. She was also a volunteer for Cloquet pre-school screening and vision and hearing testing, and a volunteer as a buyer for the Cloquet Community Hospital Gift Shop. In 1982 and 1983, Bette and her family hosted Mariolanda van der Heijden through the A.F.S. Program in Cloquet. Bette's family was always the most important thing in her life.
Her mother preceded Bette in death. She is survived by her husband, Robert Ulland; and five daughters, Renee Zavala of San Diego, Calif.; Lisa (Daniel) Squires of Gheen, Minn.; Kari Ulland of Eagan, Minn.; Kim Ulland of Benson, Minn.; and Jana (Joel) Hossli of Aurora, Ill. She is also survived by her father, Truman R. Lee of Blue Ridge, Ga.; her step-father, Walter D. Butler of Albert Lea, Minn.; one sister, Jody (David) Nechanicky of Albert Lea, Minn.; four grandchildren, Adriana and Giovanna Zavala, and Noah and Isaiah Squires; and a special daughter, A.F.S. student Mariolanda van der Heijden of the Netherlands.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Visitation will continue at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Cloquet on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Morreim officiating. Luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment services will be 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at Red Oak Grove Cemetery in Austin, Minn. It is requested that any memorials go to the St. Luke's Foundation or Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Arrangements are with Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet.
Jacquelin B. Wood, 62
Jacquelin B. "Jackie" Wood, 62, of Batavia, Ill., died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at her home.
She was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Mankato, to Henry and Viola Grundmeier.
She moved to Austin and graduated from Austin High School.
She loved to cook and do cross stitching.
Survivors include son, Robert Wood; daughter-in-law, Kim Wood; two grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Loren (Patricia) Hyland; father-in-law, Willard Wood; nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and an infant son.
Service: 9:30 a.m. memorial service, Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at the funeral home.
