Winifred "Peggy" Carroll, 77

Winifred "Peggy" Ellrose Carroll, 77, of Lyle died at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester on Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002.

She was born Jan. 7, 1925 to Emery and Anna (Rubin) Deyo in Dexter.

She attended school in Lyle and Austin.

After her marriage to Richard George Carroll on June 9, 1942, in Austin they moved to California where Richard was stationed, serving in World War II.

They returned to the Austin area to live after his discharge where Peggy was employed by Hormel Foods Corp. for 17 years.

They moved to Lyle where she was a waitress at the Copper Kettle.

She was an active volunteer and member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle.

Survivors include son Timothy (Doreen) Carroll, Lyle; daughter Erin (Michael) Volkert, Barron, Wis.; four grandchildren; sister Alice (Marloe) Ellingson, Osage, Iowa; brothers Maynard (Ilene) Deyo, Cleveland, Roger (Janice) Deyo, Dodge Center, special friend Melvin "Red" Hansen, Lyle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters and four brothers.

Visitation: 2 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the funeral home and at the church one hour before the service.

Service: 1 p.m., Monday, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lyle with the Rev. Lydia Mittag officiating.

Interment: Woodbury Cemetery, Lyle.

Douglas E. Gabrielson, 77

Douglas Edward Gabrielson, 77, of Austin died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home.

He was born April 16, 1925 to Gerhardt and Ruth (Thompson) Gabrielson in St. Paul, Minnesota.

He served in the Army Air Corp and married Betty Schumacher on October 13, 1951 in Albert Lea.

Douglas lived in Austin for almost 50 years, working at Weyerhaeuser from 1954 until 1984.

Survivors include daughter Darlene (Glenn) Thaisen, Austin; son Edward Gabrielson, Austin; three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Visitation: One hour before the service at the funeral home.

Service: 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at Worlein Funeral Home Chapel with Forrest Miller officiating.

Interment: Oakland Midway Cemetery.

Rev. Joseph G. Werner, Sr., 92

Rev-erend Joseph George Werner, Sr., 92, of Austin died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at the Austin Medical Center.

He was born and baptized in Battle Creek, Neb.

He graduated from high school in Meadow Grove, Neb.

He attended Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. for one year.

After pursuing farming for several years he attend Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Ill., graduating with a Masters of Divinity degree.

He married Irma Tews on Sept. 20, 1942 in Battle Creek, Neb.

He accepted a dual congregation in Decatur and Walthill, Neb., where he served for 43 years.

After his retirement they moved to Austin where he was active for a time filling in for church services at various rural churches in the Austin area.

He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin.

Survivors include wife Irma, Austin; daughters Mary (Arlen) Schamber, Austin, Dorothy (Rev. Mark) Meschke, Collinsville, Ill.; sons Joseph Junior (Patricia), Commerce Township, Mich., David (Elizabeth), Hamburg; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters and one granddaughter.

Service: 11 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walthill, Neb., with the Rev. Byron Tolzman and the Rev. Robert Stohlmann officiating.

Interment: St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Battle Creek, Neb.

Darlene Ann Stoa, 70

Darlene Ann Stoa, 70, of Austin, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Austin Medical Center in Austin.

She was born on Feb. 8, 1932 in Hollandale, the daughter of Jacob and Minnie (VanPuersem) VanderVoort.

On Feb. 25, 1949 Darlene married Clayton Orvin Stoa in Albert Lea.

They had seven children.

She worked for Freeborn County Health as a Home Health Aide and was active with her church in WELCA, circle, Sunday School, quilting and other church activities.

She was also involved in Moscow 4-H club and AAL until her stroke in January, 1993, and with the Health Coalition meetings.

She loved and cared for her children and grandchildren and enjoyed living on the farm. She liked helping and caring for others.

Survivors include her husband Clayton; sons Roger Dale (Carla) Stoa, Austin, James Clayton (JoAnne) Stoa, Whittier, Calif., Dean Oscar (Yvonne) Stoa, Rushford, Charles Delwin (Holly) Stoa, Blue Earth, Kevin Lee (Melissa) Stoa, Polk City, Iowa; daughter Kristine Marie (Lynn) Allas, Lansing; eleven grandchildren; brothers Everett (Janice) VanderVoort, Austin, Lee Parrish, Albert Lea; brother-in-law Melvin (Mildred) Stoa, Laporte; nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son Brian John Stoa and sister-in-law Dorothy Stoa.

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.

Service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, at Moscow Lutheran Church with the Rev. LaDonna Ekern officiating.

Interment: Moscow Lutheran Cemetery.
