Hayfield matmen split triangular

The Hayfield wrestling team took one of two duals in finishing second in a triangular with United South Central and Kenyon-Wanamingo Tuesday night in Hayfield.

The Vikings posted six wins by fall in beating Kenyon-Wanamingo 44-34, overcoming three forfeits throughout the meet. Hayfield was unable to hide with four forfeits against USC, losing 47-26 to the Rebels.

Three Hayfield wrestlers went 2-0 during the night. Danny West won a 15-10 decision against USC and posted a pin at 125 pounds against K-W. Shane Masching, the defending Class A champion at 125, moved to 95 career wins with a major decision and a technical fall at 130 and 135.

At 119, Steven Emerick pinned two opponents in a total of 3:49 of mat time.

The trio of West, Masching and Emerick attoned for Hayfield's only mat victories against USC. Against Kenyon-Wanamingo, four others chipped in with wins by pin. George Evjen (145), Sam Rud (160), Brad Evans (171) and Carl Bamlet (275) each won by fall in the first period of their respective matches.

In the night's other dual, USC defeated Kenyon-Wanamingo 46-27.

Hayfield, now 1-2 overall and 1-1 in Hiawatha Valley League duals, goes to Byron Thursday.
