Whitney Johnson bounced back from missing Austin's last gymnastics meet with an illness and vaulted the Packers to a 123.5 to 104.825 Big Nine Conference victory over visiting Rochester Mayo Thursday night in Hastings Gym.
Johnson won the all-around competition with top-five finishes in every event. She won the balance beam with an 8.6, was third on the bars, fourth on the floor exercise and fifth on the vault. The Packers outscored Mayo in every event.
"It was a very good meet between two young teams that are all developing and similar natural talent from young gymnasts who now need to refine their skills," said Austin coach Billie Jo Wicks.
Senior Danielle Chapek finished top-three in three events, including a pair of runner-up finishes. She took second on the uneven parallel bars and the floor exercise and was third in the vault competition.
Hayley Fisher was sixth in the all-around, highlighted by a fourth-place finish on the bars.
Hayley Astrup contributed a pair of top-five finishes as well, ranking second in the vault and fifth on the floor. Kelly Longueville was sixth or better in three events, and Bethany Larson was top-five in three as well.
Austin is 2-3 in overall and conference duals and is off until Jan. 2. The Packers return to action at Winona.
