Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

A foot chase resulted in the capture of a suspect carrying a large amount of marijuana and cocaine in his vehicle.

The man has appeared in court on felony drug charges and remains in the Mower County Jail.

According to the Austin Police Department, Geronimo Deluna, 26 of Blooming Prairie, was pursued by a Minnesota State Patrol trooper in northeast Austin because he was speeding.

When Deluna's vehicle finally stopped, he left his vehicle and ran away. The trooper and a backup officer from the Austin Police Department chased him for four blocks until the man ran into a house at 500 13th Ave. SE.

The officers followed and the homeowner, Joshua Slezak, told them he saw a man run through the house and into the basement.

According to the report, Slezak and Deluna did not know each other.

When officers went into the basement, they took Deluna into custody and jailed him for fleeing police officers.

When Deluna's vehicle was inspected, 80 grams of marijuana and 12 grams of a substance, which tests showed to be cocaine, were found in separate plastic bags lying in plain sight in the vehicle, according to police reports.

The incident occurred 10:56 p.m. Dec. 31, 2002, but the trooper's report was not submitted to Austin police until this week.
