Burshem tops at tourney

The 2002-03 WIBC Austin City Championship Tournament wrapped up over the weekend, when winners were crowned in team, singles, doubles, and actual all-events competition.

This year's headline performer was Paula Burshem, who is currently competing in Albert Lea this winter season. She qualified by competing in Austin's WIBC chapter during last year's summer league where she held a 175 average. She knocked down a 651 actual series in the singles event and added in 67 pins handicap for a 718 gross winning total. She was followed closely by Casey Bernholtz, who put together a 605 actual and added in 102 pins handicap for a 707 combined total.

There were 80 total entries in the singles and it took a 614 total to win cash. Burshem will be awarded a winning plaque and emblems along with her cash award.

This year's doubles champs were Vicki Wolfe and Deb Kiefer, who teamed up for a 1,303 gross total that included a big 643 actual from Kiefer. Second place went to a pair that included the familiar name of Burshem, who teamed up with Delores Boyer for a 1,293 gross total. Paula turned in a 662 actual and tournament high 258 game in this event.

There were 40 entries in the doubles event and it took a 1216 to win cash. Kiefer and Wolfe will be awarded the traditional traveling trophy, along with plaques and emblems to honor their effort.

Burshem managed a 590 actual in the team event to give her a nine-game actual total of 1,903, which is over 211 per game. She outdistanced the closest bowler over nine games by more than 200 pins to win the actual all-events competition.

The team champion, Larson Remodeling of the Monday Bowlerettes League, outdistanced 18 other competitors to win the event with a 2,881 total. Team members and their actual totals include Mary Johnson (388), Judy Jacobson (428), Julie Grass (374), Angie Hughson (565)-234 game, and Shelby Haldorson (554)-229 game. Second place went to Armstrong Service with a 2,807 combined total. Low score to win cash was 2,745. Team champions will win a free entry into the 2003-2004 WIBC City Tourney, along with a plaque and emblems.

41st Annual 600 Club

Results received from the 600 Club tournament shows that Betty Volkert was the winner with a gross total of 693 that included 197 pins handicap. Second place went to Sue Mielke with a 628 actual and a gross total of 679.

Other actual 600's rolled came from Beth Duenow with a 631, Deb Kiefer with a 608, and Mert Scott with a 601. Out of 39 entries, Mielke also had the high game of 244.
