Hayfield loses edge over Rochester Lourdes

Hayfield had to play host to Rochester Lourdes without its second-leading scorer, and the Eagles were not real sympathetic.

Lourdes overcame a two-point halftime deficit and took a 51-42 Hiawatha Valley League victory away from the shorthanded Hayfield boys' basketball team Friday night in Hayfield.

"We were 3-0 without (Tyler Kramer), but we just needed some of those same guys to play the way they did without Tyler," said Hayfield coach Chris Pack. "Especially with the short notice we didn't plan on not having him."

Kramer fell ill on gameday and was scratched from the starting lineup because of it. Lourdes got out to a 7-0 lead and eventually went up 12-2, and Coach Pack was glad his team did not pack up its tent and leave camp.

"To come back and be ahead and play them very well, I was almost kind of surprised," Pack said.

Hayfield led 23-21 at the half, but the Eagles fired out of the lockerroom at halftime and scored a 30-19 advantage in the second half.

"They came out with a little bit of an edge in the second half," Pack said of Lourdes. "They must have gotten a chewing at halftime."

Hayfield had leading scorer David Johnson to fall back on, and he had 10 first-half points an route to a team-high 19. His nine second-half points came on 3-for-3 three-point shooting, but his attempts were limited by Lourdes' defense.

"They kind of took David away a little more," Pack said. "Without Tyler, they really concentrated on him."

Lourdes (15-5, 9-3) started strong in the second half with some transition baskets off Hayfield turnovers -- the same kind of miscues the Vikings (9-10, 6-6) managed to avoid in the first half. Matt Warner scored nine of his team-high 19 in the third quarter for the Eagles, and Lourdes hit enough free-throws down the stretch to hold onto the win.

Hayfield hosts Blooming Prairie (15-5, 8-3) in a non-conference tester Monday night at 7:30 p.m. The Blossoms were surprised by Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton, 45-43, Friday night in Gopher Conference action.

The Vikings also host Stewartville (8-12, 6-6) on Tuesday. The Tigers won a double-overtime thriller in both teams' season-opener in Stewartville, 64-59.

Blossoms surprised by JWP

Kraig Olson's game-high 21 points was not enough to lead Blooming Prairie past upset-minded Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in a 45-43 Blossoms loss Friday night at home.

The Blossoms were unable to maintain a slender third-quarter lead of 33-32. Travis Priem led a trio of JWP players in double figures with 14 points, scoring six of them in the fourth quarter for the Gopher Conference victory.

Blooming Prairie (15-5, 8-3) plays its next two games on the road, starting at Hayfield Monday in a non-conference clash. NRHEG hosts the Blossoms next Friday night.
