Rebel girls gunned down, 67-51

Karleen Retterath's run as interim head coach of the Southland girls' basketball team got off to a bumpy start Friday night in Adams.

Retterath replaced head coach Slone Suess, who will be on maternity leave until Feb. 11 to care for her newborn baby. Wabasha-Kellogg had four players score in double figures and one of Southland's leading scorers went out with an injury in a 67-51 Three Rivers Conference loss.

Southland senior Carrie Shawback scored five points before hitting the floor hard and landing on her elbow. Retterath said that Shawback was unable to straighten her arm and that the team will be awaiting results of the X-ray.

Southland fell further behind immediately after losing Shawback to the injury, but the Rebels bounced back in the second half after regaining their focus.

"We didn't score much in the second quarter," Retterath said. "They fought back though and got it to within 10 a couple of times. But we just couldn't get over that hump."

The Rebels trailed by 12 after three quarters and did not get much closer.

Amanda Landherr led Southland with 15 points, while Amy Walerak and Nikki Kirkpatrick added nine each.

"Losing Carrie hurt us because we were pounding the ball inside and she was getting to the free-throw line," Retterath said. "Up until she got hurt she had scored I think all of her points at the line."

Southland was 13-of-29 from the charity stripe in the loss, while Wabasha-Kellogg was 22-of-37. The Falcons got a game-high 20 points from Amy Glomski, and Liz Hall added 13. Mindy Peters and Shelley Arens scored 10 apiece.

The Rebels host Section 1A foes Blooming Prairie on Monday and Grand Meadow on Tuesday. Both non-conference games start at 7:30 p.m. in Adams.
