Grief support group to be held

After a loved one dies, many people find that talking about their feelings is the best way to help them through their loss, said Judith Bergen, Austin Medical Center Hospice social worker.

To give people a chance to do so in a safe and non-judgmental environment, AMC Hospice is offering a six-week support group beginning March 12.

The support group is open to the public, but those who do not use the hospice program need to contact Bergen before coming.

The support groups are held every spring and fall and go over topics such as grief misperceptions, the stages of grief and the definitions of grief.

But what participants find most valuable is the chance to communicate, Bergen said.

"One of the most important things is giving people permission to talk about their grief," Bergen said.

Support group participants find themselves supporting others and some even continue to meet after the six weeks is up, Bergen said. A group that first met in 1998 still meets monthly at a local restaurant, she said.

"That's really helpful for them," Bergen said. "It's hard for someone who hasn't gone through it. It's hard for them to understand."

Many people come in with assumptions about the grieving process that aren't accurate, Bergen said.

"One misconception is there's a time limit," Bergen said. "Everybody doesn't follow the exact same progression."

Bergen said everyone grieves in their own way and said crying is OK.

"Crying is really a sign of strength if you have the courage to cry to express your grief," Bergen said.

To sign up for the group, contact the Austin Medical Center Hospice program at (507) 434-1416. The support group starts March 12 and ends April 6. It lasts from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and takes place at the Hospice building on the corner of Fourth St. NW and Fourth Ave. NW. The support group is free thanks to funding from the United Way, Bergen said.
