The Southland baseball team doubled their season win total Tuesday, sweeping a pair from visiting Fillmore Central, 6-3 and 28-7.

"It was an exciting first game," said Southland head coach Larry Luke. "The kids really had their hitting shoes on today."

The Rebels won the opener on Steve Snyder three-run home run in the sixth, which broke a 3-3 tie. Greg Retterath pitched well to make it stand up.

Sam Rindels had three hits and drove in all three Fillmore runs, but took the loss as well despite giving up only five hits.

The nightcap was somewhat less dramatic, as Southland scored in double figures in two of their five innings at bat. Snyder had another big game, banging out three hits, including a triple, and driving in four. Zach Stratton had four hits, two of which were doubles, and two RBIs. Curt Wilson had a two-run home run as well.

Southland improves to 4-6 and 4-5 in conference play. They hit the road to tangle with Wabasha-Kellogg Thursday.

Blossoms fall late

A day after losing 10-7 in extra innings, the Blooming Prairie baseball team endured another gut-wrenching loss Tuesday, dropping a 7-6 decision to host Waterville-Elysian-Morristown on three unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Down 4-3 after six innings, the Blossoms fought back with three runs to take a 6-4 lead going into the final half-inning. Unfortunately, their defense was not up to the task, as the Buccaneers scored three runs thanks to some shoddy fielding to steal the win.

"Kraig (Olson) pitched a good game and kept us in it," said BP head coach Chris Staloch, " but we didn't get our gloves working to keep it going."

Olson went the distance in a losing effort, giving up only three earned runs and striking out six. David Kramer went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for Blooming Prairie.

BP is now 4-3 in conference play and 7-4 overall. Their next game is Thursday at home against Bethlehem Academy.

Errors plague Hayfield

The Hayfield baseball team learned the hard way Tuesday that even a 7-0 lead after four innings is not a sure thing. Visiting Kasson-Mantorville came storming back to take a three-run lead, but the Vikings left the bases loaded in the final frame to fall one run short, 11-10.

"The fifth inning was a backbreaker," said Hayfield head coach Chris Pack. "They capitalized on our mistakes and got five runs."

K-M broke an 8-8 tie after six innings with three runs in the top of the seventh. Hayfield scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Nick Thompson came in to slam the door on the Viking comeback.

"It's been a rough week-and-a-half for us," said Pack, whose squad has lost five of its last six games to drop to 4-6 and 3-6 in conference play.
