In a key conference matchup, the Riverland softball team split a doubleheader Monday afternoon, routing Central Lakes 14-0 in the opener, but dropping the nightcap 6-4.

"We were aggressive at the plate and played good defense in the first game," said Riverland head coach Lisa Quednow-Bickler. "But then we got a little complacent in the second game and lost our defensive focus and aggressiveness."

The Blue Devils dominated the first game, pounding out 18 hits and getting a good outing from Marissa Kelsey, who pitched a three-hit shutout to get the win.

"Marissa really took charge out there and worked the corners of the plate well," said Quednow-Bickler.

Leading the hit parade was Erin Evans, who went 4-for-4 at the plate, while Melanie Gabrielson and Sarah Moore were both 3-for-4.

In the second game, the Blue Devils took the loss despite outhitting the opposition 12 to 10. Kelsey started on the mound before getting chased by a three-run Central Lakes second inning.

Gabrielson and Evans continued their hot hitting, as both went 2-4 in the nightcap. Beth Harsma put together a 3-4 performance, while Amber Nash was 2-3.

At 6-2 in MCCC South Division play, Riverland travels to Minnesota West for two games Thursday before returning home for makeup doubleheader against Rochester on Friday. Both sets of doubleheaders start at 3:30 p.m.
