Austin girls sprint to second place

The Austin High School girls' track team posted seven personal-best times, heights and distances in tying for second place at a Big Nine Conference quadrangular at Wescott Field Tuesday.
The Packers crowned six individuals and relays as meet champions, led by a pair of relay victories. The 4×200-meter relay team of Staci Tucker, Emily Johnson, Jenny Tucker and Theresa Hirsch won their race in a combined 1:51.11, and the 4×400 contingent of Lisa Bue, Hirsch, Jenny Tucker and Johnson took gold in 4:19.57.
Bue also won the high jump by clearing 4-10, and took first in the 800-meter run in a personal-best time of 2:28.31.
Johnson and Staci Tucker took 1-3 in the 400 with both runners posting personal-best times. Johnson was also second in the triple jump with a personal-best distance of 31 feet 2.75 inches, clearing her own mark by six inches.
Adding to the field event achievements, Hirsch took first in the shot (34-3) and Lia Middlebrook claimed second in the long jump (14-6).
The 4×100 relay team of Staci Tucker, Megan Erickson, Middlebrook and Sarah Loots stood in second, while the 4×800 relay got the silver with a season-best collaboration of 10:53.26 behind Mary Claire Chao, Carly Coddington, Megan Wilson and Amy Coddington.
In the 1,600, Molly Thatcher ran a personal-best time of 5:56.11 in taking fourth, while Wilson finished sixth in the same event.
The distance duo of Katie Munk and Natalie Bowers brought in 3-4 respectively in the 3,200.
Freshman Bethany Larson placed second in the 300 hurdles with her personal-best 53.81. Haley Fisher took sixth in the pole vault by climbing up a notch to 7-6.
The Packers run at the True Team Sections on Thursday.

Hurdlers lead AHS boys
The Austin boys' track team got top-tier finishes from its hurdlers in finishing fourth as a team at a Big Nine Conference quadrangular at Faribault Tuesday.
Evan Sorenson and Derek Hinkle scored the top two spots in the 110-meter high hurdles, while Josh Hall won the 300 intermediate hurdles in a personal-best time and teammate Josh Hansen was third.
"We had a wonderful performance from our hurdlers," said AHS boys' track coach Tony Einertson. "(Hall) has improved so much since the start of the year. His strength is certainly helping him in the 300s."
Austin held out some of its athletes from events to save up for Thursday's True Team Sections. Rounding out the top-three finishers for Austin included the 4×100-meter relay team of Ray Bissen, Tony Bissen, James Dammen and Mike Gravelle, which took third. The 4×200 team of the Bissens, Gravelle and Hall was second.
Pole vaulters Sorenson and Dammen placed second and third, respectively.
